Blue Ox Blog Power Rankings

Everyone has beaten everyone else. Many close games -- it's all pretty random now.

1 Ohio State I guess
2 Wisconsin I guess
3 Iowa Could be surging
4 Penn State Would be far and away 1 if they had stopped one play
5 Northwestern Sneaking up
6 Michigan State
7 Michigan
8 Minnesota
9 Purdue
10 Indiana
11 Illinois This one I'm sure of.

There is NO WAY Wisconsin is #2 in the Big Ten...NO WAY. Minnesota rushed for over 400 yds. and only lost because of a series of mistakes and bad luck...not to mention what Northwestern did to them last week. NO WAY.

1.Ohio State
2.Penn State (should be undefeated)
3.Northwestern
4.Michigan State
5.Minnesota (should be 6-1)
6.Michigan (should be 3-3)
7.Wisconsin (should be 5-2)
8.Iowa
9.Purdue
10.Indiana
11.Illinois

Jay, I'm going to agree w/ Andy on Whisky. They stink just enough to luck past a MN team that dominated them. I'm not going to say woudda, couldda, shoudda, but they don't deserve the #2 ranking you're giving them.
1. OSU
2. PSU
3. MSU
4. Iowa
5. NW
6. Minnesota
7. Wisconsin
8. Michigan
9. Indiana
10. Purude (the worst team in Indiana. HA! Serves them right)
11. Illinois

I do not usually participate but I cannot resist this week. I do not have an "axe" to grind against Wisconsin but were you watching that game? Two Minnesota TD's called back on questionable calls and another Mason melt-down is hardly an impressive performance by Wisconsin. I realize that Wisconsin did "win" the game and they are 3-1 in the big ten so an argument can be made that they deserve to be #2 by default(a weak argument) but I do not see how you can put them ahead of a team they lost to (NW)with one conf. loss and a team that was one play away from beating PSU. In addition, Iowa has only one loss and at least for the moment looks much better than Wisconsin. I think your rankings reflect a strong Badger bias. Finally Minnesota at 8? Michigan has the same conference record as MN and a worse overall record plus MN beat them yet you put Michigan ahead of MN. In the end Michigan may well finish ahead of MN but to put them above MN now is insulting. I think you reveal your lack of respect and general dislike of Minnesota in your ranking and this is more offensive than putting Wisconsin at 2.

OSU
NORTH
IOWA
PSU
WISCONSIN
MSU
MINN
MICH
IND
PUR
ILL

So many accusations, so little time.

First, it unfair of you guys to produce posts that I will obsess over before I teach my first class of the day and I can’t respond to at work!

Second, I’d like to diffuse this controversy by saying that I only put Wisconsin at 2 because I was worried about you guys, since you were so silent after the game and I needed to post something that would confirm that you had not collectively jumped off the Washington Avenue bridge after Saturday’s game. But that wouldn’t be true – I was concerned about the possibility of a Gopher 3 suicide pact but I didn’t scheme to smoke the three of you out.

So, the reality that I have been stewing over all day.

I’ll start with the accusation of Badger bias – and plead guilty. If that is sufficient to make you disregard my ranking, then there is nothing I can do about it.

Also, generally, I would think that my introduction and comment by the Badgers (I guess) would indicate that I am quite ambivalent about ranking the Badgers that high. But the reason they are there isn’t merely because they “deserve” to be there but because the whole Big Ten is a mess right now.

The specifics:

The one loss teams:
I admit that with Iowa, I had forgotten that their BT loss came to Ohio State and I think I would agree that they have a better claim to 2 than the Badgers.

Penn State -- I had pencilled in at 2, but I have been, in my weekly rankings, trying to give a fair amount of weight to the previous weeks results and so I couldn’t leave Penn State at 2 or even 3 given that they lost and to Michigan which has been a very vulnerable team this season. But given the inconsistency of all the Big Ten teams, considering the previous week heavily has become more and more difficult.

Northwestern -- I am disrespecting them no doubt. But their BT wins come against WI at home and Purdue – a team we all agree sucks. All their games have been close. They came within a stop of beating PS but they also could have lost to both WI and PU, those teams had the ball and needed only a score to win. To their credit NW has intercepted passes to end those drives. Yes NW could be 3-0 but if we play that game, they could also be 0-3.

Wisconsin – 3-1 in the BT with a tough road loss to NW, I guess I’m just not going to over emphasize it.

The 2 Ms
Michigan and Minnesota – What do you do with one team that loses to WI and MN but beats MSU and PS? The only other team that is as bi-polar is Minnesota. I had the Gophers at 4 after they beat PU, in overtime, after coming from behind in regulation, but they followed that up with the shellacking at PS. Then they bounced back and beat MI in the Big House only to lose to Wisconsin at home. I can’t see how to rank them higher. As to ranking them below Michigan – hey, Michigan beat Penn State this week! Now because I feel like I don’t know what Michigan team is going to show up, Michigan did not move from it ranking last week despite beating Penn State. I have already acknowledged that I am a Michigan fan on this board but I didn’t run them up the ranking after they beat Penn State. Moreover, if it is such an insult to rank Minnesota below Michigan because Michigan lost to Minnesota, I am also insulting Michigan by leaving Michigan State ranked above Michigan, despite the fact that Michigan beat State. Because of the way the Big ten has gone, it’s almost impossible to play that game. MN lost to WI, WI lost to NW, NW lost to PS, PS lost to MI, MI lost to MN and so on (Happily, that game can be played with Purdue). Finally, MN would have lost to ND too – so I don’t think the better overall record holds any water here.

Oh, and I didn’t see the game, I have it on tivo and plan on watching it tonight. But I do know that the Game was tied 10 – 10 at half and that was very much in doubt until the Gophers big drive that appeared to put the game beyond reach with 3 minutes to go. And giving up 400 yards rushing to the Gophers isn’t anything to be proud of, but I think you’d agree that the Gophers have a pretty good offensive line and set of Running Backs.

Well, that's all I've got.
