Ranking the Big Ten Coaches 2005

Stealing this idea from a post at CFN but

Top Tier -- These guys actually did a good job:
1 Barry Alvarez -- team expected to be bad 3rd in BT
2 Joe Paterno -- Left for dead, Patreno could be in NC game
3 Randy Walker -- Any time NW is above .500 the coach has done a lot right
---------------------------------------------------------
Middle Tier -- Ehh, not great, not terrible:
4 Kirk Ferentz -- An inconsistent season
5 Terry Hoeppner -- Team showed signs of life
6 Glen Mason -- Could have been better, could have been worse
7 Jim Tressell -- Not playing Troy Smith cost OSU big Texas win
8 Ron Zook -- Couldn't expect much more
---------------------------------------------------------
Bottom Feeders -- These teams should have done better:
9 Lloyd Carr -- Another joke season for a team that should be in the top 5 in the nation
10 John L Smith -- What an amazing collapse
11 Joe Tiller -- What an even more amazing collapse

1.Joe Paterno
2.Barry Alvarez (just cant put him at #1)
3.Kirk Freentz (team got better as the season went on)
4.Randy Walker
5.Ron Zook (purely based on his recruiting so-far. Look out for the Illini in 2 year!)
6.Terry Hoeppner (They'll get better)
7.Jim Tressel (Not that hard to coach at OSU with that talent...the Smith mistake was HUGE!)
8.Lloyd Carr (team got better, although he did manage to lose to #9)
9.Glen Mason (Greg Eslinger, Mark Setterstrom, Laurence Maroney, Gary Russell = 7-4? Huh? Oh yeah, he CANT build ANY KIND of defense!...And he cost us the Wisconsin game. 4th and 1 and all you need to do to win the game is get 1 yard, and Wisconsin hasnt stopped you for less than 2 the entire game....so Glen Mason decides to take the game away from his O-Line and running backs and put it into the hands of his special teams and defense? huh?)
10.Joe Tiller (came on at the end of the year and will be good next year)
11.John L. Smith (he's just an idiot, plain and simple)

Are you people all crazy? Randy Walker did the best coaching job this year in the BT by a mile over anyone else. This is a team that lost its best RB before the season, had its best D player leave the team, had a poor D to begin with, faced a brutal conference schedule and was expected to win 3 or 4 games by most people outside the Evanston area. Northwestern then goes on to beat Wisconsin and Iowa- teams that finished with winning records and something a certain MN coach has yet to do in the same season and was one play away from beating Penn State a consensus top 5 team in the nation. Add to this the fact they finished 5-3 in the conference and have maybe one or two potential NFL players on offense. Northwestern is clearly the surprise of the BT this year and he deserves the coach of the year award more than any other coach by a long shot.

2 Joe Paterno- I think everyone expected PS to be better this year and the D was not a surprise but the fact that the O could score some points was the difference b/t this being an 8-3 season instead of a 10-1 season.

3 Barry Alvarez- I know the Badgers out there think he is number 1 but he is not for the following reasons. Although Wisconsin was supposed to be down this year they were still expected to be a bowl team. I would say that they mildly surprised this year and I'm sorry but they should be 7-4- MN handed them a win. I think 3rd for Alvarez is fair - they finished third. Plus Alvarez has struggled since winning the last Rose Bowl in 99. They are not the team in the 00s that they were in the 90s.

4 Kirk Ferentz- Considering they lost most of their D line and much of their O line after last year I think Iowa finished about where they should. They did force Mich into OT and lost a strange game to North. Not his best coaching job but respectable- he proved that he can outcoach a certain MN coach.

5 Glen Mason- Surprise! I am trying to be fair to him. MN lost its best corner, DE, O tackle going into the season and faced a difficult conf. schedule. As I mentioned on this site before, he got some monkeys off his back and beating Michigan any year is commendable. In the end, he did a better job than I thought he would do this year but he also lost an opportunity to have a tremendous season and the inexcusable blunder against Wisc. makes me wonder if Mason has learned anything since he first became a head coach. Mediocore Mason - too buoyant to sink -to heavy to move forward.

6 Jim Tressel- I lost a lot of respect for him in the TX game but to his credit he realized his mistake and never tried to put Zwick back in the rest of the season, I think many coaches would have resisted that move. Still, when you are an OSU coach one game can mean the difference between 2nd and 6th.

7 Terry Hoeppner- At times this year Indiana looked improved and threatened to move up in the standings and other times they looked god awful. It's not that Hoeppner coached badly it's just that they needed to get another win in order for me to consider his performance worthy of say top 5.

8 Joe Tiller- Without question the Purdue was the biggest disappointment in the league. They were supposed to contend for a title! From what I saw they had some speed on D and their O did not suffer that many losses. Tiller could be ranked 11th but he did beat some lesser teams at the end to show that the team is not totally dead. I love it!

9 Ron Zook- Again, it's not that he was really bad, but they did lose every game in BT play and did not show much life in many of their games. I think it is reasonable to expect ILL to play tougher even if they lose. But Clearly Zook can recruit and they will contend for the title within 3 years.

10 Lloyd Carr- He starts Chad Henne at Q- that says it all. This team has underachived for at least 4 years- suffering strange and unexpected losses and this year was no different. He should be fired.

11 John L. Smith - How do you beat ND and then lose to Purdue? You could argue that MSU was not expected to be very good this year but after their start to then not finish bowl eligible is pathetic. Plus, MSU made SOOOO many mistakes in every game, and they got blown out a number of times as the year finished up. The guy can run up scores but cannot coach- he should be fired too- is this the second year in a row that MSU has missed a bowl?
